The bandaged Shishio could also be known as the Hitokiri Battousai's successor. Kenshin, as the Battousai, worked the higher, more important assassinations, while Shishio worked underground, so to say. His skills were equal, or maybe, even greater, than Kenshin's, thus, he was a worthy successor. Shishio was not always wrapped in bandages, however. When the Meiji Government came into play, Shishio was forcefully lit on fire. Gasoline was poured on his body and Shishio was burned. He had known too much about the Meiji Government, all of their dirty little secrets, so the Meiji Government decided to eliminate Shishio before he could leak out anything.

That was the Meiji Government's mistake. Somehow, Shishio had survived. His body temperature was abnormal, almost like the flames of hell were inside him, and he had suffered severe. From then on, Shishio dedicated his life to overthrowing the Meiji Government. He had a devised a plan, his Kuni Tori, and gathered ten strong and skilled men to form his ultimate Juppon Gatana.

Shishio became a threat during the tenth year of the Meiji Government's reign. He had announced his plan to overthrow the government, thus, Kenshin was asked to fight Shishio for the country's good. The two Hitokiris clashed after some time, and that's when Shishio perished in battle. There's only a certain limit Shishio's body can endure. His doctor said that Shishio can only fight for fifteen minutes. After that, his body may produce sweat, causing him to eventually combust. That Shishio did.

While alive, Shishio enjoyed some of the finer things in life. He had Yumi, one of the most expensive prostitues, as his girlfriend, owned some of the finest swords, including Kenshin's new Sakabatou's other half, Mugen Jin, and even had some of the finest black market material, i.e. the Rengoku battleship purchased from Enishi. To those who knew him well, Shishio was an intelligent being. Although sometimes crazy, he was somewhat respected.
